Frequently Asked Questions
The strongest turkey alternatives are venison and slow-grown beef. Wild venison is rich, naturally lean and dramatic on the table; a dry-aged, grass-fed beef joint delivers deeper flavour than any bird. Knepp’s Wild Range meat – venison, organic longhorn beef and Tamworth pork from its rewilded pastures – is raised for exactly this kind of festive centrepiece and delivered frozen to your door.
Venison is deer meat – one of the leanest red meats available, high in protein and iron and lower in fat than beef. Wild and free-roaming venison, like that from Knepp’s rewilding project in West Sussex, also carries a far lower environmental footprint than intensively farmed meat, which is why it’s increasingly chosen as a Christmas centrepiece.
Venison tastes rich, sweet and earthy – closer to a deeply savoury beef than the aggressive ‘gamey’ flavour many expect. Meat from slow-matured, naturally grazing deer, such as Knepp’s wild venison, is cleaner-tasting and naturally lean, suiting quick pink cooking for steaks and loin, or slow braising for haunch and shoulder at Christmas.
For a Christmas table, choose a rib of beef or sirloin from slow-grown, grass-fed cattle – the marbling and dry-ageing carry the flavour. Fully pasture-fed organic beef, like Knepp’s Old English longhorn raised year-round on rewilded land, roasts noticeably better than grain-finished supermarket joints and makes a striking alternative or partner to turkey.
For the one meal of the year where the centrepiece matters most, provenance pays: slow-grown, grass-fed animals develop more flavour, and organic systems avoid routine antibiotics. Ordering an organic meat box delivered frozen – as Knepp offers from its rewilding estate – also means the Christmas joint is secured weeks ahead rather than fought over in a supermarket.
Wild Range is Knepp’s own meat from free-roaming Old English longhorn cattle, Tamworth pigs and deer that live wild across the rewilding project. The animals’ natural grazing, browsing, rooting and trampling drive the estate’s biodiversity – helping rare species like nightingales, turtle doves and purple emperor butterflies return.
Wild Range meat is delivered frozen to your door nationwide. Christmas stock is limited to what the rewilding project naturally produces, so order early to skip the Christmas rush and secure your festive centrepiece – popular joints sell out well before December.
